Noodle is a deep immersion into the obscure brain of the fiercely anti-racist yet kookily playful artist-activist. Matt’s mythos as an inimitable music auteur creating unpredictable and exquisite music way off Australia’s well trodden ‘indie path’, has rapidly snowballing into cult favourite multi-instrumental tinkerer who leads a 25-piece alternative orchestra — zig-zagging from whimsical ‘gnome-core’ bedroom pop, second-line horns, socially conscious collabs, found object soundscapes, to Studio Ghibli-esque sweeping symphonies.

About the artist
Matt Hsu's Obscure Orchestra
Matt Hsu is a QMA-winning composer, multi-instrumentalist, and anti-racism activist creating wildly imaginative music that defies convention. As the founder of the 25-piece Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra, he blends world instruments, found objects, hip-hop, and orchestral grandeur into a maximalist yet intimate sound. His music is equal parts playful, eerie, and cinematic—like a surrealist carnival parade from a Studio Ghibli film.
Obscure Orchestra is more than a band; it’s a radically inclusive, DIY anti-racist movement, prioritising visibility for BIPOC, First Nations, disabled, trans, and non-binary artists. Rejecting the formality of classical ensembles and the unspoken 'white dudes with guitars' rigidness of indie music, Matt’s project is a kaleidoscope of genre-melding joy and social justice. His collaborations span from Tibetan Grammy nominee Tenzin Choegyal to underground hip-hop luminaries.
