The core duo are childhood friends Joel “MC Bad Genius” Beeson and Simon “Berkfinger” Berckelman, plus a rotating cast of excellent drummers, more often than not including Calvin “Calvin” Welch or Dan “W. Sweat” Williams.

For the first time on EVER on wax, Philly Jays (as they are known) would like to present to you their infectious debut from 2009 “Hope Is For Hopers”. Self-recorded on a shoe-string budget in a variety of basements, spare rooms and midnight pro-studio sessions, the album exploded across the airwaves, garnering them high rotation on commercial and community radio alike, winning them an AIR award and getting them nominations for an ARIA and Triple J Album Of The Year.

The following years saw them share their ear worm hooks and insanely catchy choruses across 5 continents at hundreds of shows, building them an enviable reputation as unstoppable party starters.

Now YOU can experience the undeniable mix of heart and joy that only Philadelphia Grand Jury can provide, in the comfort of your own home, loving remastered and cut to vinyl by the awesome Suitcase Records.

About the artist

Philadelphia Grand Jury

The Philly Jays are BACK!

Back in 2009, the band’s debut album “Hope Is For Hopers” exploded across Australianairwaves, led by the undeniable single “The Good News” which ended up in Triple J’ Hottest 100. Recorded on a shoestring budget after midnight at studios around the country, the album introduced the world to the hooky melodies and infectious energy of Philadelphia Grand Jury's brand of antipodean indie rock, even getting the iconic Seymour Stein to name them as his favourite Australian band.

In the years since, the band developed an enviable reputation of being able to get parties started in hundreds of locations in more cities than anyone can count - from Patti Smith’s basement to the back of a flat-bed truck, under the stars of the South African desert, on rooftops and all the way to the main stage of Splendour in the Grass.

After a brief hiatus, the Philly Jays decamped to Berkfinger’s adopted home of Berlin in 2015 to work on their long-awaited second LP Summer Of Doom. And after an enthusiastic response led to him putting his life in a shipping container and relocating back to their hometown of Sydney, the next phase of Philadelphia Grand Jury was beginning. With a cavalcade of drummers sitting behind the kit, the band has a new album in the bag that is full of heart, soul and more insanely catchy choruses.

But before they release their latest material, it's time to look back 15 years since the release of “Hope Is For Hopers” and celebrate what got everyone so hot under the collar in the first place. With a never-before-released LP version of the album currently being pressed and an Australian tour that will feature the seminal album in full, Philadelphia Grand Jury are back.

And that is always a reason to party (party) …
