Brisbane based Alt Rock Maestro John Drake has just released his highly anticipated debut album titled ‘Separation Songs’, which premiered exclusively via AAA Backstage.
The album was recorded with ARIA-winning engineer Cody McWaters and longtime friend/producer Chass Guthrie. Tragically, Chass was diagnosed with terminal cancer during the recording process and passed away shortly after the album was completed.
Here is John’s reflection on the making of ‘Separation Songs’
“It was September 2022 when Chass Guthrie, producer, career musician and my friend of over 15 years and I started working on my debut solo Record. It was also around the same time that Chass quietly shared with me the news that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Chass was a phenomenal Musician, probably the finest I had ever played with, what he could get out of a piano astounded me, it was like listening to an orchestra in one man. Working around his chemo schedule, relationship and family commitments as best he could Chass never stopped and insisted on finishing this record. I dedicate this record to him, my friend and soul brother. Chass Guthrie RIP.”

John Drake
Brisbane based artist John Drake crafts cinematic songs merging classic melodies, Rock n Roll poetry with tinges of Soul and Country. Drake draws influence from the likes of Sam Fender, Chris Stapleton, The War on Drugs, Nick Cave, Paul Kelly and Radiohead.
John Drake is the former frontman and co-founder of the UK based rock band ‘The Dust Coda’, having supported the likes of Guns n Roses whilst garnering positive attention from Sir Elton John and topping the Rock Albums Chart at No. 1. After stepping off the stage at London's Hyde Park in the summer of 2023, having performed to over 60, 000 people, he felt a surge of wild achievement, as a pinnacle had been reached, but also the strongest call for home he had ever experienced.
He then made the move to return to Australia after over 15 years living in London to embark on his solo career. Drake recently entered the studio with ARIA-winning engineer Cody McWaters and longtime friend and producer Chass Guthrie to craft his debut solo album ‘Separation Songs’.
He unveiled the first offering from the album, Ocean in 2025.
John then followed up with the release of his single Siren, which premiered via The AU Review. The single gained airplay on over 200 radio stations worldwide, including rotation on ABC Country. His next single Running On Empty (Back To The Man), which premiered via ABC Country quickly gained rotation on MMM Country. Most recently John released Descending Love and Soul Denying back-to-back, which were the final singles from his debut album.
John Drake has now unveiled his highly anticipated debut album ‘Separation Songs’ on all streaming platforms with a Vinyl release due for November 2026. September 2026 will also see the release of ‘Wedding Vow’ the first track from his upcoming live studio album ‘Live at the Red Hill Cottage’.
