Blending wistful folk, alt-country rhythms and mellow twang, The Wicked Messenger is a collaboration of Meanjin/Brisbane musicians - Jimi Beavis (The Holy Rollercoasters, Jimi Beavis) and Janey McEniery (The Good Ship, Doch), who draw on a cast of local musicians to bring their songs to life in the studio and on stage.
Much of the first album was melancholic and confessional melodic folk music. On their second album they've added a melodically-rich power pop angle to their sound, placing them as sonic contemporaries of bands such as Wilco and Teenage Fanclub.

About the artist
The Wicked Messenger
The Wicked Messenger is a collaboration of Meanjin/Brisbane musicians - Jimi Beavis (The Holy Rollercoasters, Jimi Beavis) and Janey McEniery (The Good Ship, Doch). With their band they make confessional and playful jangly folk. In 2021, they released debut album Bellbird Grove, with plays on Double J with Henry Wagons’ “Tower of Song” and FBi Radio’s “In The Pines”.
The six piece band features members of Jimi’s other projects (Andrew Garton, from the Holy Rollercoasters on organ and production; Chris Bancroft, formerly of Jimi Beavis, and currently The Holy Rollercoasters), old friend from the folk days Cathy Bell on violin (Tin Star), and indie drum legend and friend from our local cafe, Sam Schlencker (Skinny Jean, Ed Guglielmino) on drums.
The Wicked Messenger played Woodford as a duo in 2022/2023 and have supported such bands as The Double Happiness, the August River Band, These Idle Hands and Steve Wallis.
