Songs for Dead Sailors is the second in Toby Wren's shipwreck series after 2015's Black Mountain. It is a psychological exploration of love and loss in the time of tall ships. This is Toby's first album featuring lyrics, brought to life by the remarkable Merinda Dias-Jayasinha and an expanded ensemble featuring Andrew Garton on woodwinds and Sophie Min on piano. Underpinned by Toby's intricate guitar work and the astonishing combined feel of Andrew Shaw (double bass) and John Parker (drums), Songs for Dead Sailors ranges from mesmeric and introspective set pieces, to off-the-hook virtuosic interplay.
"A full ringing tone and suppleness of melodic invention."

About the artist
Toby Wren
Toby Wren is a composer and guitarist from Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia. He has been a creative musician for over thirty years, in the jazz and new music scene. Toby studied composition, performance and ethnomusicology, gaining a doctorate in 2015, and he is known to many as a mainstay of the jazz scene in Brisbane, including teaching jazz guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium. Jazz is an important part of his style, but he also has an ongoing love of contemporary classical music, and various world music traditions. Since 2005, Toby’s collaborations with South Indian Carnatic musicians have led to performances in India and Australia and have also made an indelible mark on his aesthetic sensibility. Toby synthesises these diverse influences into a satisfying whole in his original releases, especially his 'shipwreck' works, Black Mountain (2015), and Songs for Dead Sailors (2025).
